Here at The Gibson Girls, it is our intent to bring you a taste of the Old South,
straight from my family recipe book to your table. Inspired by my grandmother's
recipes and her remembrances from the turn of the last century, this is the origin
of The Gibson Girls:
As a child, I was always begging Mother for an extended visit with my Mamma. We
would usually work in the garden until she'd say, "Let's go bake a cake." While we were "playing" in the kitchen,
she would tell stories about growing up with her four sisters on the Gibson farm in Gallatin, Tennessee.
|
Her favorite stories centered around cooking with her Mother, making cakes from farm-fresh produce. I can still see Mamma in an apron, working over an old Kitchen-Aide mixer, telling stories about "back in the country". For instance, after churning butter, she would
sneak off to the spring house and enjoy a stolen spoonful of fresh cream!
I have loved to cook ever since I was 5 years old and have made her cakes over and over
again. All The Gibson Girls recipes are from Mamma's own mouth-watering collection.
In the kitchen, with a mixer running, I feel as if those loved ones "gone to glory"
(as Mamma would say) are watching over my shoulder. Aunts Aggie, Elizabeth, Mayme,
Mat and all the others are cooking with me, and even though they can't be
seen...they live on in my cakes and are the inspiration behind The Gibson Girls.
All cakes are named after relatives and come with the personal history of a
"Gibson Girl".
